Acton Burnell Castle

Sightseeing attraction | Shrewsbury | England | United Kingdom

Acton Burnell Castle is a remarkable example of a fortified manor house from the 13th century near the village of Acton Burnell in Shropshire, England. It was built between 1284 and 1293 by Robert Burnell, the Bishop of Bath and Wells and Lord Chancellor under King Edward I. Although referred to as a "castle," it is more of a fortified manor house than a typical castle.

The structure is made of red sandstone and impresses with its well-preserved exterior. The large windows on the first floor indicate that the building was less designed for defense purposes, and more to demonstrate the status and wealth of its builder.

Historically significant, Acton Burnell Castle was the site of a parliament in 1283, where the House of Commons was first mentioned. After the death of Robert Burnell in 1292, the property remained in family ownership but was eventually abandoned and fell into ruin in the 15th century. Today, the remains of the manor house, including the outer walls and the gables of the adjacent "Parliament Barn," have been preserved. The ruins offer a fascinating insight into medieval architecture and the history of England.

Acton Burnell Castle is now managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding countryside. Information panels on site provide additional historical context and contribute to understanding the significance of this location.

A visit to Acton Burnell Castle is not only worthwhile for history enthusiasts, but also for anyone who appreciates the picturesque landscape of Shropshire and the remnants of medieval architecture.

While it is usually a peaceful place, my visit was disrupted by parents allowing children to climb the walls and play inside the castle. Such behavior by irresponsible individuals can disturb the tranquility. Implementing a small entrance fee may deter such actions.

One of the free-to-visit sites managed by English Heritage, this location features informative boards detailing its history. The castle remains largely intact, with some missing elements. It resembles more of a grand home than a typical castle. Limited parking is available, and a walk through the woods leads to the castle. While there are no on-site facilities, it appears to be a popular spot for picnics.

Easy to locate, with parking available along the main drive. The main path to the castle was closed, leading to a diversion through the church. The grass surrounding the castle is overgrown. During my visit, the wet conditions resulted in soaked footwear. The castle has an open, four-sided structure.
